Sharpened by the Storm: A Father’s Stand Against Darkness

God’s Promise:

“For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” — Hebrews 4:12 (ESV)

The Sword That Saved Me

Men, have you ever held onto something so tightly that it felt like it became part of you? A weight you couldn’t let go of, even when it seemed too heavy to carry? That was me in the years after my divorce. I was newly saved, still learning what it meant to walk with Christ, and then—just like that—my marriage was gone.

I can still feel the way my heart sank. The way the world dimmed. My children, the ones I was supposed to protect, felt further away than ever. The pain was sharp, deep, and constant. But through all of it, I had God.

Even when my spirit was broken, I still prayed. Even when I felt weak, I still clung to His Word. Even when the enemy whispered lies into my ears, I still sought Jesus. And in those dark days, I realized something: I wasn’t just surviving. I was sharpening my sword.

At first, that sword was heavy. Cold. Unfamiliar. I held it close because it was all I had. My faith was new, and I didn’t yet understand the weight of the Word of God in my hands. But I never let go.

Sixteen years later, I see it clearly. That sword—the Word of God—saved my life. What once felt like a burden is now an extension of who I am. It’s light in my hands because I have learned to wield it. It’s my weapon against the darkness. It’s my guide in leading my family, my comfort in trials, my strength in moments of doubt.

Now, as a father, husband, and leader of my home, I see my role differently. I don’t fight for my own strength—I fight for theirs. I fight for my wife’s peace, for my children’s faith, for the generations that will come after me. And I do it with a sword that is not my own but His.

Men, we are called to stand firm. To be the reflection of Christ in our homes. To be the kind of men the darkness fears, not because of who we are, but because of the One who stands with us.

So sharpen your sword. Wield it well. And when the enemy comes knocking, let the light of Christ shine so brightly in you that darkness has no choice but to flee.

Shepherding in Action: Today’s Value

Surrendered Strength

A man’s strength is not in his own power, but in his surrender to God. When we surrender to Him, we trade our burdens for His strength. As shepherd leaders, our role isn’t to fight battles alone but to stand firm in His Word, wielding the sword of truth to protect and guide our families.

Reflection Questions for Men:

  1. What “sword” are you carrying today? Is it the heavy burden of self-reliance, or the light yoke of Christ’s strength?
  2. In what ways are you sharpening your faith daily? Are you in the Word, in prayer, in fellowship?
  3. How can you use your strength in Christ to protect and lead your family against the darkness?
