Why God Is Raising the Bar in Your Life?

— A Devotional for Men Who Refuse to Settle —

You will never grow if you’re always trying to move ahead of what God is doing.

Have you ever felt that quiet pressure in your chest—not fear, not stress—but something deeper, like your spirit is being stretched? That may not be anxiety from life… it might be the Holy Spirit raising the bar. Right now, there’s an opportunity in my life that I know is from God. I can feel Him working in me—building something deeper, stretching me, growing me. And I don’t want to rush it. I want to be ready.

God’s Word for Today
Romans 12:2 — Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. (ESV)

I’m going to speak straight to you today, brother.

When you walk out your front door each morning—off to work, off to handle “the stuff”—how far are you walking away from your true home? I don’t mean your address. I mean your real home. God’s presence. Your calling. Your role as shepherd.

There’s a kind of pressure I’ve been carrying lately. It’s not the kind that screams. It’s quiet. Still. It presses gently but firmly on my heart, like God Himself is reminding me, “I’m doing something in you. Don’t get ahead of Me.”

And I’ll be honest—five years ago, I wouldn’t have listened.

Back then, I would’ve picked up the phone, sent the email, knocked on the door, made the move. Not in sin, but in impatience. In the flesh. In the name of “getting things done.”

And every time I did that—every time—I got in the way. God was doing something higher, and I tried to force it. And what came from that? Nothing. No fruit. Just frustration and confusion. Looking back, I see it clearly. I was working on a plan that God wasn’t in yet. He hadn’t revealed it to me… because I wasn’t ready to carry it.

God doesn’t give revelation to men whose character can’t carry it. That’s not me being harsh—it’s truth. That’s grace.

And that’s how He grows us.

So here’s the challenge I’m laying down today: Stop praying for breakthrough if you’re not ready to carry what comes with it. Start praying like a man who wants to grow. Ask God to raise the bar on your life, your character, and your leadership—and mean it.

I’ve been thinking a lot about this lately—how God gives us deeper insight as our character grows. Not when we ask louder. Not when we hustle harder. But when we grow in trust and obedience.

That’s the mark of a Christian man. That’s the mark of a shepherd.

Men, I want to challenge you with something I’ve been doing: Kaizen your prayer life.

“Kaizen” is a Japanese word that means “continuous improvement.” It’s not about perfection—it’s about consistent, small steps in the right direction. I’ve applied this in business before, and I’ve applied it in faith. It works.

Kaizen isn’t about shouting at the heavens or making grand declarations. It’s about quiet, intentional, daily improvement.

Start with what you have. You don’t need big spiritual leaps.
Take small steps—daily consistency beats spiritual hype.
Let every part of your family “team” grow. Let your kids see you growing.

Reflect. Review. Learn. Adjust. Keep walking.

Kaizen fits with Romans 12:2. It’s not hype, it’s transformation. It’s not world-chasing, it’s mind-renewing. It’s not rushing results, it’s growing in faith.

So, let me ask you again: Are you willing to pray this?

“God, raise the bar in me.”

Not for comfort. Not for ease. But for character. For clarity. For leadership.

Brother, we are not just called to survive the world’s chaos. We are called to lead through it. To walk in it without becoming it. To guide our homes with a quiet confidence that only comes from walking closely with Jesus.

That kind of man isn’t formed in comfort. He’s formed in stillness. In surrender. In trust.

Spiritual anxiety might not be a red flag—it might be a wake-up call. A holy discomfort letting you know that God is working something deeper. That He’s calling you up. That He’s watching to see if you’ll stay steady while He builds what only He can build.

Don’t run from it. Don’t numb it. Don’t rush it. Let it do its work.

You might just be standing at the edge of a new level of leadership. And your family’s waiting for you to walk into it.

Let God raise the bar.

Today’s “Shepherding in Action” Value
Spiritual clarity comes from consistent character. When a man daily seeks God and prays to grow, God raises the bar—and reveals more of Himself to those willing to lead with obedience.

Reflect / Apply / Share

  1. Reflect – Where have you been tempted to move ahead of God’s timing, and how might that reveal something He still wants to grow in your character?
  2. Apply – What’s one small, daily step of prayer you can commit to this week that aligns with the Kaizen approach to spiritual growth?
  3. Share – Who’s one man in your life you can encourage today to lead with greater patience and trust in God’s process?
