Men, the sword is in your hand—but it means nothing until you decide to use it.
Are you tired of playing the Christian part while secretly feeding the very sin that’s killing you? You suit up for Sunday, but sin’s still sitting on the throne. You can’t lead in truth while letting darkness live rent-free in your soul. It’s time to choose who dies.
God’s Word for Today
Romans 6:1–2 — “What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it?” (ESV)
When a man finally decides to kill the sin in his life, everything changes. This isn’t about trying harder. It’s not about cleaning up your act just enough to get by. No, brother, it’s about a total, radical, complete decision. A line in the sand. A moment before God where you say, “Sin dies here.”
Sin doesn’t just fade away. It doesn’t go down easy. You can’t ignore it, suppress it, or manage it like a pet on a leash. The Bible says you must crucify sin. That’s the word. Crucify. Nail it down. Put it to death. Romans 6:1–2 (ESV) — “What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it?”
That moment you decide sin must die is the greatest moment in your life. Why? Because it’s the beginning of real freedom. It’s the moment you pick up your sword—God’s Word—with purpose. With strength. With clarity. It’s the moment you say, “I’m not letting sin make decisions for me anymore. I am done watching my family suffer from the effects of my passivity, my addiction, my anger, or my silence.”
Psalm 69:2 talks about the mire. The muck. The slow drowning that sin causes. “I sink in deep mire, where there is no foothold; I have come into deep waters, and the flood sweeps over me.” That’s where sin keeps you—barely breathing, stuck, dragging your family down with you. And yet, Jesus offers a new way. He offers life. But it begins at the cross.
This is personal. It’s not about your neighbor or your pastor or your men’s group. It’s about you. Your sin. Your sword. Your surrender.
Have you made the moral decision that sin must die in you? Not managed. Not delayed. Not pushed off for another day. Put to death. Fully and finally. Galatians 2:20 (ESV) — “I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me.”.
Let the Spirit of God search your heart. Ask Him to dig deep and expose the hidden places. Psalm 139:23 (ESV) — “Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts!” . You can’t fix what you refuse to face.
Oswald Chambers lays it out straight: Know that suppressing sin is not killing it. Many men try to stuff it down, pretend it’s under control. But sin that’s suppressed is still alive. It still stirs. Still speaks. Still destroys.
Take time alone with God. No distractions. Just you and Him. Let the weight of His presence push past your excuses. Make time to be still and honest.
Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal the battle. What is that one area where you keep falling? What lie are you believing? What false comfort are you clinging to? Name it. Then bring it to the cross.
Let Christ live in you. This is not about you being stronger. This is about Jesus taking over. John tells us in John 3:30 (ESV), “He must increase, but I must decrease”. You surrender. He leads. You die to sin. He breathes new life.
And men, don’t forget this: Killing sin isn’t just about you. It’s about your family. Your wife. Your kids. Your legacy. You can’t lead what you’re still dragging through the mud.
When you pick up the sword of the Spirit—God’s Word—it won’t feel natural. At first, it might feel too big. Too heavy. Too sharp. You’re not used to wielding truth with this kind of power. But practice. Get your grip. Stay in the Word. Keep showing up. Keep swinging.
The sword will grow familiar. And you’ll grow stronger. Because God doesn’t call perfect men—He calls surrendered men.
But hear this: the sword is useless if you don’t first decide that sin must die. If you understand the Word but refuse to act on it, then all you’re doing is carrying a weapon you never use. That makes you vulnerable. And it leaves your family exposed.
This is the call: Kill sin so Christ can live. Now, Not later.
This is where shepherding begins. Not with leadership books or clever plans. It begins with your own repentance. Your own surrender. You can’t protect your home if you haven’t cleared out the enemy in your own soul.
So here’s the question, brother: Will you make the decision today to kill sin?
Today’s “Shepherding in Action” Value
Radical surrender to Jesus clears the way for strong, godly leadership in your home.
