Your Secret Service

YouTube Title:  When No One’s Looking

The man who serves in secret is the one heaven rewards.

Because you serve in silence before God, the enemy gets loud—but he’s already lost, because your quiet obedience holds the sword and walks with the Spirit.

Matthew 6:1 (NIV), “Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven.”

Men, let me tell you something the world won’t: leadership starts in the quiet. Not in the spotlight. Not on stage. In the dark hours of the morning, in the small choices, in the unseen moments of integrity and prayer. That’s where real strength is born. Too many of us are waiting for someone else to lead while our families slowly drift. Waiting is killing us. Pride is blinding us. And the enemy is celebrating.

This morning, I didn’t leap out of bed. I laid there. For a bit longer than usual. My routine is early: 3 or 4 a.m., devotion, prayer, study. But today the Lord pressed something deeper on my heart: the quiet sin of pride among men who say they serve. I had to face it myself. I’ve seen it in church, in Bible studies, fellowship, men’s groups, and yes, in my own reflection.

We want credit. We want to be seen. Even when we serve, there’s that whisper of, “I hope someone notices.” But the minute we crave the spotlight, we miss the cross. Jesus served in secret. He taught us to wash feet, not chase applause. If the applause of men feeds you, the Spirit can’t lead you.
REPEAT: If the applause of men feeds you, the Spirit can’t lead you.

Men, don’t get caught in the trap of spiritual performance. You don’t need to prove anything to anyone but God. That’s it. The most powerful things you do for your wife and kids won’t be posted. They won’t be shared. They’ll be lived. And that’s where your real legacy is built.

Stop looking for the crowd. Look to Christ. He didn’t need man’s approval to move mountains. He just obeyed. You can too. You must.

Pride says, “Look at what I’m doing for God.”

Humility says, “God, do Your work in me.”

One leads to burnout and bitterness. The other leads to peace and power. That’s the kind of man your family needs. Not a loud man. Not a proud man. A present one. One who knows the value of hidden obedience. One who doesn’t need the title “daddy” or “leader” to carry the heart of a servant.

I’m not saying this to shame you. I’m saying it because we’re at war. Our homes are under attack. Our sons are looking to us. Our daughters are watching what strength looks like. And if we don’t get this right, they’ll believe the lie that leadership looks like dominance instead of discipline. That serving is weak. That pride is power.

And if you’re thinking, “This isn’t happening in my home—I’m well protected,” brother, take a closer look. The enemy gets loud where quiet obedience is happening, and if you’ve been serving in secret, that’s why he’s fighting back. But stand firm—your obedience is your covering, your sword is sharp, and the Spirit of God is with you.

You see, Jesus flipped that script. And we have to live it.

Serve in secret. Forgive without being asked. Pray when no one sees. Speak life over your family when you feel tired and empty. That’s what shepherding looks like. That’s the kind of leadership that builds legacy.

Men, it’s time to reject pride. Drop the act. Kill the ego. Stop tuning your heart to ‘WIIFM, ‘What’s in it for me’ and start tuning it to WGOD, God’s voice. Take the three daggers—’I,’ ‘me,’ and ‘my’—and lay them at the foot of the cross. You don’t need to have all the answers. You just need to follow the One who does.

Pick up your Bible before you pick up your phone. Speak to your Father before you speak to the world. Fight for your family before the world finishes pulling them apart. Stand firm, stand low, stand faithful.

This isn’t about being perfect. It’s about being present. Let your quiet obedience be louder than the enemy’s lies. Let your unseen faithfulness lead your family to Jesus.

Lift your head high. Carry your cross daily. And walk strong in the shadow of the Shepherd.

You are called. Act like it.

Today’s “Shepherding in Action” Value is “Hidden Obedience”

Leading as a man of God means doing the right thing even when no one is watching, trusting that God sees and honors what man never will.

Reflect / Apply / Share

  1. Reflect – What areas of my life do I secretly crave recognition for, and how is that impacting my walk with God?
  2. Apply – What is one quiet act of servant leadership I can do for my family today, without expecting praise?
  3. Share – How can I encourage another brother to lead in quiet strength, not public pride?

Bible References (NIV)

Matthew 6:1 — “Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven.”

Personal Prayer

God, help me silence my pride and follow Your lead. Teach me to serve when no one sees, and lead my family with quiet, steady faith.
