The Intentional Shepherd: Leading with Purpose, Love, and Strength

The Intentional Shepherd is a man who has committed his life to following God’s Word and leading his family with purpose, love, and strength. He serves God first and foremost, understanding that his role as a husband, father, and leader is rooted in a deep, personal relationship with Christ. He doesn’t just react to the world around him—he actively shepherds his family, taking responsibility for their spiritual well-being and guiding them with the heart of a servant.

This concept is built on the idea that every man is called to be an intentional shepherd in his home—leading his wife and children with grace, humility, and unwavering love. And just as the shepherd carries a staff to guide and protect, the Intentional Shepherd carries the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God, and uses it to guide his family, protect them from spiritual dangers, and equip them for life.

The Next 5 Week Days: A Journey of Leadership

Over the next five week days (starting Monday), we will focus on five essential words that shape the Intentional Shepherd’s role: Agape, Friend, Relational, Renewing, and Transformative. Each word highlights a key aspect of leadership that every man can apply in his role as a husband, father, and servant leader in his home.

Day 1: Agape – Unconditional, Sacrificial Love

  • Agape is the foundation of all servant leadership. This is the selfless, unconditional love that we are called to embody as leaders in our families. The Intentional Shepherd loves his wife, children, and community with a love that is not based on feelings or circumstances, but on the sacrificial love Christ showed us. 1 John 4:19 says, “We love because He first loved us.”

Day 2: Friend – A Love that Lays Down Our Life

  • On Day 2, we’ll look at Friend—the kind of love that goes beyond mere duty. Jesus called His disciples friends, showing us that a true friend is one who sacrifices for the good of others. The Intentional Shepherd is called to be a friend to his family, always seeking their well-being and offering guidance, support, and compassion. John 15:13 tells us, “Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.”

Day 3: Relational – Building Real, Genuine Connections

  • Relational love is about building true, authentic relationships. As a husband and father, the Intentional Shepherd invests time and effort into developing deep, meaningful relationships with his family. These relationships are rooted in love, trust, and faith. Matthew 22:37-39 reminds us of the command to love God and love our neighbor as ourselves.

Day 4: Renewing – Transformation Through Christ

  • On Day 4, we will focus on Renewing. The Intentional Shepherd understands that true leadership begins with personal renewal. His heart and mind must be continually transformed by God’s Word. Romans 12:2 encourages us to be transformed by the renewing of our minds, so that we can live out God’s perfect will in our lives.

Day 5: Transformative – Love that Changes Hearts and Lives

  • On the final day of our five-day journey, we explore Transformative love. The Intentional Shepherd recognizes that his leadership has the power to change the hearts and lives of those in his family. He leads by example, and his love has the ability to inspire change, growth, and spiritual maturity in his children and wife. 1 John 3:14 says, “We know that we have passed out of death into life, because we love the brothers.”

The Sword: A Weapon of Leadership

Throughout this journey, we will also focus on the power of the sword—the Word of God. Just as a knight carries a sword as a symbol of strength, protection, and authority, the Intentional Shepherd carries God’s Word as his weapon. The Bible is not just a book of teachings—it is a sword, able to defend against the lies of the enemy and protect our families. Ephesians 6:17 tells us, “Take the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.”

The Intentional Shepherd uses the sword to lead with wisdom and to protect his family spiritually. The Word of God empowers him to lead with grace, truth, and integrity.

Conclusion: A Model for Men of the Shepherd

The Intentional Shepherd is a model for every Christian man. It is a calling to lead with love, wisdom, and strength. The role of a husband, father, and servant leader is not one of passivity or reaction, but one of active leadership—leading through sacrificial love, building strong relationships, renewing our hearts and minds, and transforming our families with God’s truth.

Over the next five days, we will dive deeper into each of these essential qualities. As men of the shepherd, we are called to rise up and lead our homes with intentionality, knowing that we serve God first and foremost. We are not just leading for ourselves, but for the generations that follow us.
