God’s Promise:
1 John 4:19 – “We love because He first loved us.”
Agape – Unconditional, Sacrificial Love
I remember a time early in my marriage when I thought love was about grand gestures—flowers, date nights, and the occasional handwritten note. And while those things have their place, I learned that real love—the kind that sustains a marriage, raises godly children, and leads a family—is built in the quiet, unseen moments. It’s found in the late-night conversations when exhaustion tugs at your eyelids but your wife needs your listening ear. It’s in the patient response when your child spills juice on the freshly cleaned floor for the third time that day. It’s in the decision to serve even when you feel empty.
That’s Agape love. It’s not about how we feel. It’s about a commitment to love like Christ loved us—sacrificially, unconditionally, and without expecting anything in return.
Jesus modeled this love in every step of His journey on earth. He washed the feet of His disciples, even knowing one would betray Him (John 13:5). He healed the sick, touched the untouchable, and spoke life into those the world cast aside. His ultimate act of love was laying down His life—not because we deserved it, but because He chose to love us first.
As men, husbands, and fathers, we are called to shepherd our families with that same sacrificial love. The love that serves without seeking recognition. The love that stays steadfast when life gets messy. The love that leads our children not with dominance, but with grace and firm guidance.
King Rehoboam, Solomon’s son, is an example of what happens when love is absent from leadership. Instead of serving his people with wisdom and care, he ruled with harshness, seeking his own gain (1 Kings 12:13-14). His failure to lead with Agape love divided the kingdom. In contrast, Christ calls us to lead not by force, but by serving (Mark 10:45).
In my own life, I’ve learned that Agape love means being the first to forgive, even when I feel justified in my frustration. It means showing up, day after day, even when my efforts seem unnoticed. It means loving my wife and children not based on how they treat me, but because Christ has already poured His love into me.
This kind of love is not passive; it is pro-active. It moves first. It is not earned; it is given freely. And it is this love that will transform our homes into places of peace, security, and godliness.
Shepherding in Action: Today’s Value
Sacrificial Love Strengthens Leadership – A man who leads with Agape love builds trust, security, and strength in his family, modeling Christ’s leadership in the home.

- How can you demonstrate Agape love in a tangible way to your wife, children, or family today?
- When was the last time you chose to love and serve someone even when it was inconvenient?
- What is one area in your leadership where you need to love more like Christ?

Prayer for the Man of the Shepherd:
Father, teach me to love as You have loved me. Help me to lead my family with a heart that serves, forgives, and sacrifices, even when it’s difficult. May my leadership reflect Your love, drawing my wife and children closer to You. Amen.
